Madeira - the wine that built America
February 10 2026 | 6:30 PM - 8:00 PM24 Harrison St, New York, NY 10013
February is MADEIRA Month at terroir
Why?
Because MADEIRA is America’s wine.
That sounds like fake news!
Well, from the early 1700s, thru roughly 1860,
the wine of choice in the Colonies, and then America,
truly was a wine of Portuguese origin,
from a volcanic outcropping in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean,
called MADEIRA.
SOME HISTORICAL EXAMPLES:
-Thomas Jefferson was accompanied / inspired
by a constantly filled pint of MADEIRA
as he crafted the Declaration of Independence
in Philadelphia in June, 1776…
-on July 4th, 1776, the Declaration of Independence
was signed by John Hancock +++
and the union of the 13 colonies and their representatives
toasted their success with MADEIRA
(apparently, the 56 signatories
consumed 57 bottles of MADEIRA wine).
The specifics of the event:
-it will be a seated gathering, at our Cellar Room Table
-6 Madeiras will be enjoyed during the class + a welcome wine
-we will explore the grapes and styles and ageing capacity of this wondrous wine
-there will be a snack, because we want your bellies to be happy
-there will be instruction and conversation, lasting roughly 60 minutes.
We very much look forward to celebrating
Madeira and American History with you.
