Our Footie Heroes - Gerd Muller

Born on November 3rd, 1945 in Nordlingen, Germany,
Gerd Müller is simply the greatest goal scorer ever in the game of football.
Known by all as Der Bomber, Gerd scored 365 goals in 427 Bundesliga matches
(100 more than his nearest rival)
and 68 goals in 62 international matches.
Initially though, his short stature, squat frame and lack of speed
caused his first coach at Bayern Munich to state:
“What am I supposed to do with a weightlifter?!”
What Gerd had was a very low center of gravity, allowing him to turn on a dime.
In addition, he possessed lethal acceleration.
And combined with a uncanny schnoz for the onion bag, he was unstoppable in the box.
Gerd always attributed his strength (he had thighs the size of California Redwoods)
to his mother’s potato salad.
Of the many highlights in his career,
the winning goal in the 1974 World Cup Final vs. the much-favored Dutch
demonstrated all of his awesome skills.
The entirety of his career in Germany was played with Bayern Munich
from 1964 until 1978, where he was the top scorer each season.
He joined the Fort Lauderdale Strikers of the N.A.S.L. in 1979,
a rather sad venue for the greatest goal scorer ever.
